Capri - Australia Day Rally

I usually celebrate Australia Day by attending this event promoted by the Bayside Restorers and had my green 1600 Deluxe ready to go. However, some early morning showers didn’t indicate a great day, weather wise. I was also worried that my wipers may not work but they did their job, even if it was only for a few minutes. At least with overcast skies, the temperature was much cooler than previous years. Arriving at the Ormiston school oval indicated a huge number of cars & it took a little time getting in & directed to a parking spot. I think this would have been one of the biggest I have attended with both ovals full of cars.
There is never any shortage of variety of vehicles at this event. There were Fords (of all types), Holdens, Cadillacs, GM muscle cars, Austins, Minis, MGs, Sprites, Porsches, Rollers, Indian motorcycles, Jags, Jeeps, Vauxhalls, Bedfords, Fire Engines and even a Capri. The star of the show was a 1903 Grout steam vehicle which came chugging in on its own steam! That makes it 113 years old! It was followed by a huge cloud of steam & at first one thinks the car is on fire. It is a very rare car & worth a Google.
This is always a well organised event with a BBQ breakfast supplied for the cost of a raffle ticket. Unfortunately, we didn’t collect any prizes this year. At about 10.30, cars departed the school to commence one of the four rallies throughout the Redlands district.

Capri - Badges & Lights

During a bit of a clean up of my spare parts last week, I came across some bits that were in better condition than the ones on the cars. The Capri badge on the back of my white car was slightly damaged & the spare XL badge was much better than the one on the car. So with a bit of black paint dabbed into the grooves & then some polishing with my new Aldi mini grinder/polisher, I had some better badges.

I also found a spare front indicator light. It needed a fair bit of cleaning but it looked a lot better than the one on the car which was starting to yellow where I had glued it some years ago. Again with some careful polishing, it came up pretty well.

Capri - Correct Radiator Cap

After owning Capris for nearly 15 years, I have only recently discovered that there are 2 types of radiator caps. Yes, some might say I am a slow learner but I have learnt this recently after talking to other Capri owners & trying to solve the mystery as to where the radiator water was going.
Last week, after taking my green Capri for the usual run, I was forced home with a climbing temperature gauge. After the engine cooled down, there was not a great deal of water in the radiator. Where had it gone? All the more serious places revealed no water & again, after discussion with those more in the know, I realised my new radiator cap was not the non-recovery type.
Normal caps  are used with those cars which have a recovery tank attached to the radiator overflow hose. Neither of my cars have a recovery tank so the caps should be the non-recovery type.
Most caps on sale at the usual parts places are the normal recovery type so after an online search, I found the two brands most common in Australia and the two type of caps suitable for the Capri 1600s.
They are:
Tridon: Non recovery CN1390
             Recovery CA1390

CPC: Standard (non recovery) 508-13
         Recovery 543 -13
My new Tridon cap cost $14.95 at Super Cheap but had to be ordered in as there were none in the store.
As you can see in the photos, it is difficult to tell the difference & there are no markings on the top to indicate which type they are.
I hope now that I have solved this problem.

Capri - Capris for Sale

A Happy New Year to all you Capri enthusiasts where ever you might be.
Not much Capri activity at the moment around in this part of the world so these two Capris caught my attention, mainly because of the asking prices.

This really nice fully restored 1970 V8 Capri is presently listed on EBay with the bidding reaching $35,100 after 34 bids. It has still not yet reached the reserve price but has 2 days still to run.

The same car is listed on Car Sales for $65,000 so I guess the Ebay auction is falling a bit short of the asking price.
POSTSCRIPT
5/1/2016 Not sure whether this car sold as the bidding reached $38,800, after 50 bids but did not reach the reserve.
Here is another interesting & great looking fully restored 1969 1600 GT for $35,000 on Gumtree. (sorry, but I couldn't capture the photo)
